About my Work
I am an industrial designer. I shaped my first surfboard when I was 14 years old. Surfing was an early passion and creating and crafting with my hands always came natural.
I had an early start back in the 80s with Star Model and then Polen Surfboards. It was an important era for surfboard design and Surfing development in Portugal, where I was lucky to be involved with.
I´ve been creating my own designs since then, having had the chance to share my shaping room with different master shapers such as Darren Handley, Bill Stewart and Pedro Battaglin from Rusty Surfboards, brands which I’ve worked for, enriching my experience as a shaper.
At DHD I shaped hundreds of surfboards, including some Jack Freestone’s magic ones.
As an Industrial Designer by training I’m driven to innovation and constantly try new designs and technologies, having developed a pioneering flexing system for surfboards - the 7-flex. I’ve also designed, shaped and manufactured the first corkboard tested by Garrett McNamara in the waters of Nazaré and Francisco Lufinha’s Kitesurf board, which obtained the world record for the longest non-stop kitesurf crossing: Lisbon-Madeira.
I´m currently the resident shaper at Xhapeland factory in Cascais where I develop my own brand LaCrau Surfboards, and also shape for brands like Rusty, JR and Simon Andersen.
I have a rigorous mind and inventive spirit and thanks to you LaCrAu Surfboards grows in and out of Portugal.
